The holiday season is here and there’s a festive spirit in the air that signifies hope and joy. There’s also fun and excitement on the cards as children look forward to their winter breaks. From baking to sending cards and making a snowman – there are a lot of activities that we can plan to engage children with. Tons of communication and language learning opportunities too for AAC users in every activity. After all, the best way to learn something is to do something we thoroughly enjoy and absorb knowledge or learn a skill in the process.
Here are a few fun ideas to incorporate learning into fun AAC activities:
Winter Science Activity: Make Your Own Snow
Winter means cold breeze, snow showers, hot cocoa, and holidays to most of us. Don’t have snow where you live? You can still make fake snow. This fun activity helps children understand concepts of big, small, weight, making observations during a scientific experiment, etc.
Winter Sensory Activity: Squishy Snowman
Sensory play is a great way to teach language and self-regulation to children. It includes activities that stimulate the senses – sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste, and vestibular. They offer an immersive experience for the child to learn functional communication and language with hands-on activities.
Too cold outside to build a snowman? Or do you live in a place where there’s no snow? Make your own snowman with things lying around the house and make him squishy too.
These fun winter-themed activities help AAC learners get exposure to language and concepts that are vital to literacy. If the learner’s AAC system does not have all the vocabulary, we can use the descriptive method to teach the concepts.
